Family engagement is a crucial element in ensuring that the academic and social-emotional lessons students receive in early care and education are strengthened and endure into kindergarten and beyond. The A. Sophie Rogers School for Early Learning (ASR) puts family engagement at the forefront of what they do, and a recent study from our partner Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy reveals the school’s success.
Every week, ASR holds events to which parents are invited. These include coffee hours in the morning after children are dropped off, and storytimes in the late afternoon when parents come to pick up their children. In addition, special programs are planned monthly around events like Week of the Young Child or seasonal and commemorative holidays, like the Fall Festival.
A survey of ASR parents conducted during the previous academic year found that nearly nine in 10 parents attended at least one event at the school each semester, and roughly eight in 10 parents agreed or strongly agreed that these events benefited their children and made families feel more connected with the school.
“Our school is a community, and families are an important part of that,” said ASR’s principal, Anneliese Johnson. “We partner with families and offer resources and support to continue learning across home and school.”
The study was developed and conducted by Crane researcher Dr. Tiffany Foster, with the assistance of former Crane graduate research associate Julie Planke. The study was funded through Crane’s Postdoctoral Scholar and Senior Scientist Seed Fund, which promotes research within the Crane Center.
